Perth’s Best Boating Spots (Ocean & Swan River Guide)
At Extreme Finishings, we’re on and around Perth’s waterways constantly — launching, retrieving, testing finishes, and talking with boat owners who use their vessels in all sorts of conditions. Over time, certain locations consistently stand out as enjoyable, practical and well suited to different styles of boating.
This blog shares our own observations and opinions on some of Perth’s most popular boating spots — based on local use, typical conditions and how these areas tend to perform throughout the year. This is not a fishing guide and does not provide regulatory advice.
Before You Head Out – Local Conditions & Regulations
Boating conditions in Western Australia can change quickly, particularly in coastal and offshore areas.
Before heading out, we strongly recommend skippers:
- Check local marine weather forecasts, including wind strength and swell
- Be aware of marine parks, restricted zones and no-anchoring areas
- Follow WA boating speed limits and navigation rules
- Ensure all mandatory safety equipment is onboard and serviceable
For the most current boating and safety information in Western Australia, always refer to:
- Department of Transport (WA) – Marine Safety
- Official marine weather services
- Local port or harbour notices where applicable
If your boating day also involves fishing, crabbing or collecting any marine life, you must separately check licensing requirements, size limits, bag limits and seasons with DPIRD and Recfishwest, as these rules change regularly.
Rottnest Island
In our view, Rottnest remains Perth’s main boating hub. The variety of bays means there’s usually an option that works depending on wind direction and conditions.
Best suited for:
- Family boating days
- Swimming and snorkelling
- Sheltered anchoring
- Full-day trips
Bays we see used most often:
- Thomson Bay – structured, calm and predictable
- Geordie Bay – well protected for mixed groups
- Parakeet Bay – clear water and great visibility
- Porpoise Bay – quieter and more popular with adults
Our take:
Rottnest is fantastic when planned properly, but conditions can change fast. Moorings are limited and the western side of the island is exposed to heavy swell, which we only ever recommend for experienced skippers.
Penguin Island & Shoalwater Marine Park
This area consistently stands out as one of the most family-friendly boating locations south of Perth.
Best suited for:
- Young children
- Low-swell boating days
- Short trips and relaxed outings
Why it works so well:
- Shallow, calm water
- Natural sandbars
- Generally predictable conditions in good weather
Things to keep in mind:
Sandbar positions shift seasonally, tidal movement can change depth quickly, and wildlife protection zones mean speed restrictions apply.
Mandurah Estuary & Peel Inlet
If calm water is the priority, Mandurah is hard to beat.
Best suited for:
- Beginner skippers
- Family cruising
- Relaxed, low-stress boating days
Why many boaters love it:
- No ocean swell
- Long, sheltered channels
- Extensive canal systems
- Regular dolphin sightings
Our experience:
It’s one of the easiest places to enjoy a full day on the water, though some areas become shallow at low tide and summer traffic can be busy.
Northern Suburbs – Mindarie, Quinns & Burns Beach
For boaters who enjoy clearer offshore water and fewer crowds, the northern suburbs are a popular choice.
Best suited for:
- Adult groups
- Scenic coastal cruising
- Swimming and snorkelling when conditions allow
What we notice:
- Cleaner, deeper water
- Less congestion than southern spots
- Easy access from marinas and ramps
Conditions note:
The afternoon sea breeze arrives quickly. In our opinion, earlier departures always make for a better day up north.
Hillarys Boat Harbour & Surrounding Beaches
Hillarys remains one of Perth’s most predictable and controlled boating environments.
Best suited for:
- New boaters
- Families with very young children
- Short, sheltered outings
Why it’s reliable:
Breakwalls significantly reduce swell
Clean, stable water
Facilities and services close by
Matilda Bay (Crawley)
Matilda Bay is one of the most consistently calm sections of the Swan River.
Best suited for:
- Families
- Paddle boards and kayaks
- Relaxed anchoring and social outings
Our view:
It’s a great option when coastal conditions aren’t ideal, offering flat water and easy access without the stress of swell.
Swan River – Our Preferred Boating Sections
The Swan River is often underestimated, but it offers some of the most enjoyable boating in Perth, especially for slower-paced days.
Freshwater Bay (Claremont)
Deep, calm and scenic — ideal for relaxed cruising.
Mosman Bay
Sheltered with clean water and quieter surroundings, popular with adult groups.
Point Walter
Well known for its shallow sandbar and calm swimming areas. Conditions change quickly beyond the sandbar toward Blackwall Reach.
Elizabeth Quay & South Perth
A favourite for sightseeing, city views and short river cruises.
Ascot, Maylands & Guildford
The quietest sections of the river, well suited to beginners and low-speed boating.
Boating Locations We Find Photogenic
From a visual standpoint, these locations consistently produce great results:
- Parakeet Bay
- Matilda Bay at sunrise
- Elizabeth Quay skyline
- Shoalwater sandbars
- Mandurah canals
Before You Go – Look After Your Vessel
Every location mentioned above exposes your boat to Perth’s harsh conditions — UV, salt spray, fenders, mooring lines and constant movement all take a toll over time.
If your hull, topsides or paintwork are starting to look tired, faded or dull, a professional repaint or restoration can dramatically extend the life and value of your vessel.
